Reflect & Connect 2
Reflect and Connect 2
My wondering from my level two internship was focused on how positive student/teacher relationships can affect student behaviors in the classroom. I previously collected literature as data to support the importance of positive student/teacher relationships. I also collected data from my field placement from things like newsletters, textbooks, observing my CT’s use of flexible seating in her classroom, using advice from CT, and observing my CT’s classroom rules. My wondering has shifted now that I am in my field placement more frequently compared to last semester. As I started taking on roles in the classroom and teaching my students different concepts in mathematics, I wondered, “How can the use of self-assessment help improve student learning in mathematics?”
With a new shift in my wondering, new data must be collected to help further my understanding on the topic. I began my search for the use of self-assessments in the classroom. In the first article I found, they conducted a study to see students’ view of the use of self-assessments and the conclusion was that students viewed the self-assessments as a useful learning tool (Shatri & Zabeli, 2018).
This was valuable information for me because I want my students to see the importance of self-reflection as well.
In another article that I found, pre-service teachers completed self-assessments specifically about their performance in math, and their self-assessment scores deviated from the teacher’s assessment scores for them. The pre-services teachers scored themselves high on the self-assessments, but then received low assessment scores from teacher (Podgorsek & Lipovec, 2017). This article definitely brought up good points I need to be aware of before implementing the use of self-assessments. Students need to understand honesty is important in their reflection in order for true development in learning. If they are not understanding a concept, I rather they are honest in their self-reflection, compared to just writing a high score. This will be key to my students’ success.
In my next article I read, the use of self-assessment and peer-assessment were discussed as strategies that are employed to encourage students to take more responsibility for their learning process (Seifert & Feliks, 2019). In the study sample, students wrote about how they benefitted a lot from the process of self-reflection and peer-assessment because they were able to apply all the feedback.
In the last article I read, the author discussed how to involve students throughout the assessment process. Student reflected metacognitively about their writing through self-assessments and reflected on the quality of their own writing. The results from this study show how students embraced being involved in their own learning and were engaged in self-assessment (Litterio, 2018).
